A Mentoring Program to Enhance English Literacy and Numeracy at Satit Phatnawitya School, Yala, Thailand

This community service activity aims to improve English and Mathematics literacy among students at Satit Phatnawitya School, Yala, Thailand, using interactive, contextual, and problem-based learning approaches. The program involved Indonesian students who provided training to teachers and students, utilizing educational games, board tasks, and real-life context-based problems. The results showed significant improvement in students' abilities, both in speaking English and solving Mathematics problems. In addition to academic improvement, the program also succeeded in strengthening the socio-cultural ties between the Indonesian and Thai educational communities. The approach, sensitive to the Islamic values at the school, helped foster harmonious relationships between the students, teachers, and the Indonesian volunteers. Indonesian students also gained valuable experience interacting with the local culture, enriching their perspectives on developing inclusive and culturally sensitive teaching methods. This program is expected to have a long-term positive impact on the quality of education at the school and serve as a model that can be implemented in similar schools in Southern Thailand and other countries with similar cultural backgrounds.
